An interesting aspect of personal lending that tends to be coming up more and more these days surrounds the contexts of a given loan itself. Specifically, lenders are continually being placed in positions where they need to rely on an understanding of outside economic conditions to make a decision about the kinds of risk that even a small personal loan presents.

The 5 C’s of Credit: Character

The first major characteristic of intangible lending comes down to an evaluation of a borrower’s Character. By examining both a borrower’s personal and financial character, a lender is able to get a better understanding of just how this individual operates, and better evaluate their situation.

It is through this evaluation that a lender is able to distinguish a borrower which they would like to do business with, even if they don’t present an ideal quantitative picture.

In evaluating the personal character of a potential borrower, a lender will judge the character of their client across a fairly broad spectrum. However, regardless of the first impressions left after the meeting, the lender will sit down and evaluate six main personal traits: Trustworthiness, Integrity, Loyalty, Integrity, Stability, and Experience.

These soft rules are more flexible to accommodate an individual’s personal ability to repay debt. While they are by no means a standard benchmark for lending in the USA, they do provide a compass for smaller banks and credit unions, which tend to have a better capacity to lend on the basis of relationship.
